What OCD Really Is

OCD is a cycle. Unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) create intense anxiety — and to relieve that anxiety, you feel driven to perform certain actions or mental rituals (compulsions). The relief is temporary, so the cycle repeats, often growing stronger over time.

It is exhausting, it is isolating, and it is far more than a preference for order or cleanliness. OCD can attach to anything — safety, health, relationships, morality, symmetry. Whatever form it takes, it is a recognized, treatable brain-based condition — not a personality quirk or a failure of willpower.
